Tinubu vows to uphold media freedom, consider policy reviews

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has affirmed his unwavering commitment to upholding media freedom and respecting diverse opinions, whether critical or complimentary toward his government.

This pledge was conveyed by Tinubu’s media aide, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, in Abuja on Monday, following the President’s meeting with members of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).

During the meeting, Tinubu assured NPAN members of his willingness to contemplate their request for a comprehensive review of policies impacting newspaper publishing. He acknowledged the concerns raised by the association, particularly regarding regulations that impede access to newsprint.

Additionally, Tinubu pledged the Federal Government’s efforts to alleviate the burden of high transportation costs during the festive season by providing waivers to airlines, road, and rail transport operators. He also addressed steps underway to mitigate the price of cooking gas.

Expressing appreciation for the support and critiques directed at his government, Tinubu acknowledged the vital role played by the media in holding the government accountable. He emphasized that despite differing opinions, his administration remains committed to respecting and considering various viewpoints.

“I appreciate the ongoing discourse within the country. Your support and criticisms, even if against our government, are valuable. Without the backing of many of you, I would not hold this position as President. We will continue to honor your perspectives, even if they differ from ours,” President Tinubu affirmed.
