Nigeria secures semifinal spot in AFCON 2023 with Lookman’s decisive goal

Date:

In a thrilling encounter at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast, Nigeria emerged victorious over Angola, securing a coveted spot in the semifinals.

The defining moment came with a first-half goal by Super Eagles striker, Ademola Lookman, ensuring a narrow win for the Nigerian side.

The match, played on Friday night, witnessed a spirited Angola squad making a determined bid to reach their first-ever AFCON semifinal. In the early minutes, Angola’s Mabululu had a close-range volley expertly denied by Stanley Nwabali in the fourth minute, setting the tone for an intense clash.

However, it was Nigeria that broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Moses Simon’s well-executed cross found Ademola Lookman, who confidently turned the ball into the net. Lookman’s goal, coming just before half-time, provided the Super Eagles with a crucial lead.

Angola, undeterred, launched several attempts to level the score. In the second half, substitute Zine seized an opportunity from Show’s throughball, managing to beat Nwabali but witnessing his shot rebound off the post.

Despite a VAR intervention that disallowed Victor Osimhen’s header due to offside, Nigeria’s Eagles held firm, ensuring that Lookman’s goal remained the decisive factor in securing their place in the AFCON semifinals.

As Nigeria advances to the next stage of the tournament, fans await with anticipation to see if the Super Eagles can clinch the AFCON title in the Ivory Coast.
