In a significant move on Tuesday, the Nigerian Senate suspended Senator Abdul Ningi for a period of three months following his allegation that the Federal Government was operating two budgets.
The suspension came after a lengthy debate spurred by an amendment to the motion raised by Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan, a process that consumed several hours of Senate proceedings.
Senator Ningi had made headlines after granting an interview the previous week, where he alleged that a substantial sum of N3.7 trillion could not be accounted for in terms of allocated projects. His comments sparked a heated debate among Senators, leading to various proposals regarding the duration of his suspension.
Initially, Senator Ekpeyong Asuquo moved to amend the motion, suggesting a six-month suspension for Senator Ningi. However, Senator AbdulRahid Mallam Maidori countered with a proposal for a one-month suspension. After deliberations, the Senate President facilitated a voice vote on the recommended durations, ultimately sustaining the three-month suspension.

It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding integrity and responsibility in public discourse, particularly concerning matters as crucial as the national budget.
Senator Ningi’s suspension reflects the Senate’s resolve to address allegations of misconduct and ensure that Members uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and accountability in their roles as public servants. As the Senate continues its legislative duties, this action reaffirms its commitment to transparency and good governance in Nigeria’s democratic processes.
