MainOne subsea cable repairs as Nigeria internet connectivity improved

Date:

Nigeria is poised to experience enhanced internet connectivity following the successful repair of subsea cables that caused widespread outages in March 2024.

MainOne, a leading digital infrastructure company, announced the completion of repairs to its submarine cable system, a key provider of internet capacity to Nigeria.

In a statement, MainOne acknowledged the collaborative efforts of regional partners, maintenance providers, vessel owners, and permitting authorities in facilitating the repair process. With their support, MainOne has resumed regular operations, ensuring uninterrupted internet access for its customers.

The disruption in March stemmed from seismic activity on the seabed, affecting internet connectivity not only in Nigeria but also in Ghana, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and other African countries. Damage to four critical cables, including the West African Cable System (WACS), African Coast to Europe (ACE), SAT3, and MainOne, significantly impacted internet speed and accessibility across the region.

During the repair period, MainOne implemented measures to mitigate the impact on its customers, including providing restoration capacity and rerouting traffic to functional subsea cables. This proactive approach aimed to minimize disruptions and maintain essential internet services for businesses and individuals.

Funke Opeke, Managing Director of MainOne, expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration of partners, the patience of customers, and the dedication of the company’s team throughout the outage.

The successful restoration of the MainOne subsea cable underscores the importance of resilient infrastructure in ensuring reliable internet connectivity, driving economic growth, and fostering digital inclusion in Nigeria and beyond.
