In a groundbreaking move to support technological innovation, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), has unveiled a N100 million AI Fund in collaboration with Google.

The initiative, announced by Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani, is aimed at empowering Nigerian startups leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop transformative solutions across various sectors.

The AI Fund will offer up to N10 million to each selected startup, along with access to Google’s AI tools, mentorship, and a global network. The fund seeks to boost Nigeria’s digital economy by nurturing homegrown talent and fostering impactful innovations.

“This fund is a major investment in the future of our nation. By supporting our startups, we are empowering them to lead the next wave of technological advancement,” said Dr. Tijani during the announcement.

The program, which is open to Nigerian-based startups with at least one Nigerian founder and a focus on scalable AI-driven solutions, will also provide resources to those already showing early market traction. Applications are open, with the selected startups set to be announced in October 2024.

NCAIR’s National Coordinator, Dr. Bunmi Ajala, emphasized the significance of the partnership, saying, “Our collaboration with Google highlights our shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.” Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, echoed the sentiment, affirming Google’s dedication to supporting digital innovation across Africa.

Startups interested in applying are encouraged to submit their applications through the designated portal, with the program officially commencing after the announcement of successful candidates.
