Nigerian Artists Secure Grammy Nominations for the 66th Recording Academy Awards

Date:

Nigerian music enthusiasts are excited as some of their favorite artists receive nominations for the prestigious 66th Recording Academy Awards, also known as the Grammys. The nominees for the 2024 Grammys were officially announced on Friday, raising anticipation for the upcoming awards ceremony set for February.

Among the distinguished Nigerian artists who have garnered nominations are Davido, Asake, Olamide, Burna Boy, and Ayra Star. Burna Boy, known for his regular Grammy appearances, stands out as the Nigerian artist with the most nominations. He is recognized in the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category for his song, ‘Sittin’ on Top of the World,’ featuring 21 Savage.

In a notable showdown, Burna Boy and Davido compete in the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ category, and they also find themselves in the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category alongside Asake & Olamide (for ‘Amapiano’) and Ayra Starr (for ‘Rush’). Moreover, the two artists clash again in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category with ‘I Told Them’ by Burna Boy and ‘Timeless’ by Davido.

Another Nigerian artist, Blessing Offor, has secured two Grammy nominations for ‘My Tribe’ (in the ‘Best Contemporary Christian Music Album’ category) and ‘Believe’ (for ‘Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song’).

Notably, Tems, the talented Nigerian singer-songwriter, did not make the list of nominees despite her co-writing of ‘Lift Me Up’ with Rihanna, Göransson, and Ryan Coogler. However, she remains in contention for a Grammy in the ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media’ category for her song ‘No Woman No Cry’ featured in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. This year’s Grammys will introduce three new categories: ‘Best African Music Performance,’ ‘Best Alternative Jazz Album,’ and ‘Best Pop Dance Recording’ as part of broader efforts to enhance the transparency and fairness of the Grammy Awards process, according to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr.

The anticipation among music lovers is palpable as the nominated artists gear up for the highly anticipated awards show in 2024.
