Terseer Waya, fondly known as Kiddwaya, a former housemate of Big Brother Naija All Stars, has shared a distressing episode from his life that sheds light on the perils of misdiagnosis.
The third evicted housemate from the Big Brother Naija ‘Lockdown’ season revealed how he narrowly escaped dire consequences after being wrongly diagnosed and administered incorrect medication.
In a recent conversation with the renowned media personality Hero Daniels, Kiddwaya recounted the harrowing experience that unfolded in 2020, shortly after his appearance on the reality show had propelled him to fame.
He narrated, “About eight weeks after the [BBNaija Lockdown] show, everything was perfect, everything was good. Then one day, as I was speaking to my cousin on my bed, I stood up to go to the toilet, and suddenly my legs started trembling.”
During this unsettling time, the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, which only added to Kiddwaya’s concerns. He recounted the physical symptoms that troubled him, including leg tremors, a dry tongue that resisted hydration, and blurry vision. Naturally, panic set in.
Kiddwaya took swift action and consulted his doctor, expecting answers and a solution. The unexpected revelation was staggering – his blood pressure (BP) had skyrocketed to 180. The baffling situation led him to believe he might have contracted COVID-19, considering the prevailing circumstances.
However, this was where the story took an unexpected turn. The doctors, unable to pinpoint the exact cause of his high BP, prescribed blood pressure medication, a decision that could have been catastrophic.
As Kiddwaya recounted, “They [doctors] put me on BP drugs for months which was not what was supposed to be done. I actually could have died because what I had was an anxiety attack, it raised your BP high and then bring it back down to normal levels.”
This misdiagnosis led to him taking medication that was not only unnecessary but also harmful. The medication disrupted his blood flow, which could have resulted in severe consequences had the situation persisted.
It wasn’t until Kiddwaya sought medical advice in London that the truth came to light. His doctor clarified that he had been experiencing an anxiety attack, a condition that was “nothing to worry about.”
Kiddwaya’s story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accurate diagnosis and proper medical care. It underscores the need for healthcare professionals to thoroughly assess symptoms and provide informed guidance. This cautionary tale also highlights the significance of advocating for oneself and seeking second opinions, especially when medical decisions carry potential risks.
