An escalating surge of chickenpox and other diseases has been verified within the Agagbe Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, located in Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State.
Last week, DAILY POST reported that at least nine children were afflicted by measles within the same camp.
The chairman of the IDP camp, Mr. Terna Jacob, disclosed to DAILY POST that medical practitioners from a nearby private hospital had identified the outbreak of chickenpox.
According to Jacob, the medical professionals relayed this information to government officials who visited the camp during the weekend. The officials, reportedly representing the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), sought to authenticate the reports circulating in the media about measles, other illnesses, and prevailing hunger in the camp.
“SEMA was here to confirm the widespread news in the Agagbe IDP camp concerning sickness and hunger. They interviewed Mrs. Ioryoosu Udisugh, who gave birth in the toilet, and she told them the same story,” Jacob stated.
He further indicated that the officials visited the European Economic Community (EEC) hospital in Agagbe, where doctors confirmed the presence of measles. Additionally, these medical practitioners also communicated the occurrence of chickenpox to the officials.
Meanwhile, the camp manager revealed that Reverend Father Bua Cletus, the vicar in charge of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Agagbe, informed him of a generous contribution. Two individuals had donated N70,000 to aid in addressing urgent health concerns at the Agagbe IDP camp.
“We have been able to take them to St. Francis Xavier Primary Health Care, Agagbe, so far. If the money remains, we will still take in more ill people,” the camp manager emphasized, highlighting the ongoing efforts to address the health challenges within the camp.
