A bridge connecting several towns and villages within Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State has collapsed as a result of a heavy downpour on Sunday.
The collapse occurred at approximately 1 pm while motorists were traversing the bridge.
According to reports, the collapsed bridge has added to the difficulties faced by the local community, although there were no reported casualties. The bridge, which was constructed around 1970, played a crucial role in facilitating the movement of people and goods within the area.
Aliyu Baga, a resident of Shendam, verified the incident and explained that the bridge served as a vital link for various essential services, including access to hospitals and markets. He expressed concern over the economic and social impacts of the collapse, as it disrupted the flow of farm inputs and other essential commodities.
Baga appealed to relevant authorities to intervene promptly and address the situation, given the bridge’s significance to the local population’s daily lives. The collapse has necessitated the search for alternative routes to access the town and nearby local government areas, exacerbating the challenges faced by the community.
