Lagos State doubles minimum wage for civil servants, Governor Sanwo-Olu announces

Date:

In a move aimed at providing relief to civil servants amidst economic challenges, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, has announced the doubling of minimum wages for state workers earning N35,000.

Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed this development during the flag-off of the “Eko Cares Initiative”, a social intervention program launched to alleviate the hardships faced by residents due to the country’s economic downturn. The announcement took place at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

According to the governor, the wage increase, which commenced in January of the current year, is part of the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its workforce. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the decision was made to provide relief to public officers who have been grappling with economic pressures.

“The civil servants and all public officers know that since January, we have continued to pay the wage allowance, minimum of N35,000, over and above what they were earning before,” stated Governor Sanwo-Olu. “So, what it means is that people that were earning a minimum of N35,000 to N40,000 before are now earning N70,000. That’s what they’ve been enjoying since January.”

Sanwo-Olu further clarified that the salary increment was implemented even as the state anticipates the approval of a new minimum wage by the federal government. The governor’s announcement underscores his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of civil servants and ensuring their financial stability amidst economic uncertainties.

The decision to double the minimum wage reflects Lagos State’s proactive approach to addressing the needs of its workforce and reaffirms Governor Sanwo-Olu’s pledge to create an enabling environment for all residents to thrive.
