MOHBAD: NDLEA claims late singer was never arrested, detained

Date:

On Saturday, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) refuted claims made by the police that they had not responded to an inquiry regarding the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The Lagos State Police had asserted during a press conference on Friday that the NDLEA had not confirmed reports circulating on social media about the arrest and detention of Mohbad on February 24, 2022.

However, in a rebuttal to the police’s statement in Abuja, Mr. Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at the NDLEA, clarified that the anti-drug agency had indeed responded to the police inquiry as far back as September 28.

Babafemi emphasized, “To underscore the seriousness that the NDLEA attached to the police inquiry, our formal response, dated Thursday, September 28, was sent to Lagos by air and was delivered to and received by the police on the same day.”

In the NDLEA’s response, they categorically denied the allegations that Mohbad had been arrested or detained by their agency on February 24, 2022, or any other date prior to or after that. They also asserted that there was no basis for the claim that Mohbad had been given any substance to drink.

Babafemi substantiated his statement by providing an acknowledged copy of NDLEA’s response, clearly showing that the police had received it in Lagos on September 28.

The controversy surrounding Mohbad’s death at the age of 27 on September 12, which led to his exhumation for autopsy on September 21, has sparked protests by fans and celebrities in several states. They have demanded justice, suspecting foul play in the circumstances of his death.

The police have arrested Mohbad’s music promoter, Balogun Eletu, known as ‘Sam Larry,’ and Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, in connection with multiple conflicts they had with Mohbad before he parted ways with Marlian Records. Marlian Records is owned by musician and songwriter Naira Marley.

Another individual in police custody in connection with Mohbad’s death is his close associate, Owodunni Ibrahim, who goes by the alias “Primeboy.”
