The Senate on Wednesday confirmed former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, following an extensive screening session at the National Assembly.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation after lawmakers approved the nomination through a unanimous voice vote during the Committee of the Whole.
General Musa’s screening lasted more than three hours and featured rigorous questions on national security. The nominee strongly criticised negotiations with bandits, vowing that the Defence Ministry under his leadership would intensify operations to dismantle criminal networks terrorising the country.
He also faulted the reintegration of so-called “repentant” Boko Haram members into society, arguing that terrorists should face stricter punitive measures rather than rehabilitation programmes.
Calling for increased funding for the military, Musa highlighted that Nigeria still imports most of its essential fighting equipment. He urged the federal government to improve defence infrastructure and logistics to better support troops on the frontlines.

The minister-designate also emphasised the need for stronger border security to prevent foreign infiltration. He lamented delays in prosecuting arrested terrorists, describing the process as “too slow,” and recommended shorter trial periods to ensure swift justice.
Tensions briefly rose during the screening when some lawmakers protested that the nominee should not be questioned on insecurity and should instead be asked to “take a bow and go.” The Senate, however, proceeded with full questioning.
Following his confirmation, Senate President Akpabio congratulated General Musa and urged him to deploy his experience effectively in the fight against insecurity nationwide.
General Musa is expected to assume office immediately as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
