Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have unanimously rejected any coalition or merger plans as the 2027 general elections approach, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the party from within.
The resolution was reached during the PDP Governors’ Forum meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, and chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi. Present at the meeting were Governors Peter Mbah (Enugu), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Douye Diri (Bayelsa), with Delta and Akwa Ibom represented by their deputies.
In a communiqué read by Governor Mohammed, the forum dismissed speculation around party mergers, stating: “The Forum will not join any coalition or merger.”

However, they expressed openness to welcoming individuals, parties, or groups interested in joining the PDP’s mission to reclaim leadership in 2027.
Reaffirming a previous stance taken in Asaba, the governors addressed internal party leadership, directing that the deputy national secretary assume the role in an acting capacity until a substantive national secretary from the Southeast zone is nominated and ratified.
The forum also voiced solidarity with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid the political crisis and threats of emergency rule, declaring: “We restate our commitment to stand with him until the end.”
Concerned by the worsening insecurity in states like Borno, Katsina, and Edo, the PDP governors called for a review of the national security strategy.
“The Forum finds alarming the worsening security situation in the country,” they stated, while condemning recent attacks in Plateau State and extending condolences to affected communities.
Looking ahead, the governors announced a zoning committee for party office allocations ahead of the national convention set for August 28–30, 2025, in Kano. The committee will be chaired by Governor Douye Diri, with Governors Dauda Lawal and Caleb Mutfwang serving as vice chairman and secretary respectively.
The meeting concluded with gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for their hospitality.
