Uganda’s silverbacks set to face Nigeria and Cape Verde in afrobasket qualifiers

Uganda’s national senior men’s basketball team, the Silverbacks, have discovered their opponents for the upcoming 2025 Afrobasket qualification campaign following draws conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In the draw, the Silverbacks found themselves grouped with West African powerhouse Nigeria and another familiar contender, Cape Verde, in Group B. The final team in the pool will emerge from the Zonal Qualifiers of Zone 1 and Zone 2.

Scheduled for February 2024, the qualification games are set to feature the Silverbacks competing against these formidable opponents in a bid to secure a spot in the prestigious Afrobasket tournament.

Interestingly, this draw echoes a previous scenario where the Silverbacks were placed in a similar group during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers. Notably, Uganda had also encountered Cape Verde in the qualifiers for the 2021 AfroBasket, with both nations meeting again in the quarterfinal of the final competition.
