CAF delists Libya vs Nigeria AFCON qualifier amid controversy

Date:

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially delisted the Group D second-leg fixture of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

The match, initially scheduled to take place in Libya, has been removed from CAF’s updated schedule amid ongoing controversy.

The Super Eagles were set to face Libya after securing a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday. However, the return leg was thrown into disarray after Nigeria’s players and officials were reportedly stranded at a Libyan airport for over 14 hours, leading them to return home instead of proceeding with the match.

Following this incident, CAF launched an investigation after the Libya Football Federation accused Nigeria of sabotage and threatened legal action. The football governing body’s Tuesday game schedule noticeably excluded the Libya vs Nigeria fixture, signaling the delisting of the match.

In a related development, the President of the Libyan Football Federation, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, announced his resignation during a meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly. His resignation comes amid mounting criticism and tension over the treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles during their ill-fated trip to Libya.
