Breaking new ground, FIFA, the global governing body of football, has officially announced its plans to host the 2030 World Cup, marking an unprecedented collaboration across six nations spanning three continents.
In an announcement posted on FIFA’s official website, it was disclosed that Spain, Portugal, and Morocco have been selected as the host nations for this historic tournament. However, the opening three matches are scheduled to be played in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
This monumental decision by FIFA is in honor of the sport’s centenary, with a special focus on the legacy of the inaugural 1930 World Cup. FIFA’s intention is to inaugurate the tournament at the iconic Estádio Centenário in Uruguay, where the very first World Cup match was held in 1930, ultimately won by the host nation, Uruguay, in a thrilling 4-2 victory against Argentina.

The official statement from FIFA reads, “In 2030, the FIFA World Cup will unite three continents and six countries, inviting the entire world to join in the celebration of the beautiful game, the Centenary, and the FIFA World Cup itself.”
Furthermore, FIFA’s Council unanimously voted in favor of awarding the hosting rights to the combined bid submitted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. These nations will serve as the hosts for the event in 2030 and will automatically qualify for the tournament, pending the successful completion of the bidding process conducted by FIFA and approval by the FIFA Congress in 2024.
In recognition of the historical significance of the inaugural FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Council has also unanimously agreed to organize a special centenary celebration ceremony in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, where the tournament had its humble beginnings in 1930. Additionally, three World Cup matches will be hosted in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, paying homage to the sport’s roots and its enduring global appeal.
