President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has showered praise on the Super Eagles following their hard-fought bronze medal victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), declaring that their achievement “feels as good as gold.”
In a statement released late Saturday, the President commended the national team for their mental toughness, specifically noting their ability to bounce back from the heartbreak of a semi-final loss to host nation Morocco just days prior.
The Super Eagles secured the third-place trophy after a dominant performance against seven-time champions Egypt, eventually sealing the win via a clinical penalty shootout. President Tinubu remarked that the team’s recovery from the semi-final disappointment serves as a testament to the national character.

“Our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off,” the President stated. “They have once again demonstrated the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit associated with our country.”
Acknowledging the high expectations of millions of fans, the President admitted that hopes for the championship trophy were dashed last Wednesday. However, he emphasized that the team’s “gallant” performance against Egypt restored a sense of pride across the nation.
The president praised the team for overpowering a powerhouse like Egypt. He stated that all Nigerians will be proud to see the team decorated on Sunday, and also explicitly thanked the players for their “dignity and effort,” calling the bronze medal a major feat.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to receive their hard-earned medals on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of the grand finale between Morocco and Senegal.
The President concluded his message with a direct thank you to the squad: “Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
As the team prepares for the podium, the Presidency’s message has resonated with fans who see the third-place finish as a platform to build upon for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
