Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, recently unveiled potential avenues for job creation by leveraging initiatives such as a certified installer/maintenance program for Starlink and collaborating with local hardware startups to produce repeater boxes.
These discussions unfolded during his meeting with SpaceX’s Senior Director of Global Licensing and Activation, Ryan Goodnight, at the ongoing International Telecommunication Union-World Radio Communication Conference in Dubai.
Tijani shared this development on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting Nigeria’s prominent status as Starlink’s largest market in Africa. He underscored the importance of addressing the connectivity needs of underserved Nigerians while exploring opportunities for job creation in the tech sector.

In a tweet, the Minister stated, “Excellent conversation with Ryan Goodnight, Snr. Director, Global Licensing and Activation of @SpaceX on the sidelines of ITU-WRC 23, who shared that Nigeria is their biggest market in Africa. As demand for @Starlink continues to grow in Nigeria, we spoke about the issue of connecting unserved and underserved Nigerians.”
Moreover, Tijani expressed the intention of potentially generating thousands of new jobs in Nigeria through innovative programs tied to Starlink, such as establishing a certified installer/maintenance program and collaborating with local hardware startups to produce repeater boxes. He also aimed to encourage tech companies, including @elonmusk, to invest in and enhance Nigeria’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.
Data from the Nigerian Communications Commission revealed that since its official launch in Nigeria in January 2023, Starlink has amassed 6,756 wireless Internet subscribers. Nigeria marked Starlink’s inaugural operational base in Africa and its 47th global operational country.
The Minister’s proactive discussions underscore Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging technological advancements to address connectivity challenges and bolster job creation initiatives in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
