In a significant move towards achieving Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan target of 70% broadband penetration by 2025, Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL), a subsidiary of IHS Holding Limited, has introduced an extensive 10,000km fiber optic cable network across the country.
IHS Nigeria, the parent company, is taking a comprehensive approach by implementing fiber-to-the-tower (FTTT) technology to bolster transmission capacity. This initiative not only supports the performance of existing fiber access networks but also lays the groundwork for advanced technologies like 5G services.
GICL’s fiber optic network, spearheaded by IHS Nigeria, focuses on connecting towers and extending fiber infrastructure to pivotal metropolitan areas. The primary objective is to facilitate the seamless delivery of digital services to homes, businesses, and public institutions through collaborative efforts with strategic partners.
Alongside the fiber optic rollout, IHS Nigeria has successfully implemented mobile network coverage in over 580 rural communities that were previously without connectivity. This achievement, part of the rural telephony program, aims to bring essential voice and data services to these communities. It aligns with the targets set by mobile network operators and supports the digital inclusion agenda outlined by the Federal Government.

Kazeem Oladepo, Vice President of GICL, emphasized the importance of overcoming limitations in existing fiber optic networks to enhance communication services, introduce emerging technologies, and drive digital services across Nigeria. The deployment strategy places a strong emphasis on open access and shared infrastructure, providing robust and scalable fiber pairs, along with alternate ducts, to enable multiple operators to effectively utilize the infrastructure.
Oladepo further highlighted GICL’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s digital economy objectives. He emphasized collaborative efforts with stakeholders, including customers, state, and federal agencies, showcasing the potential for accelerated critical infrastructure rollout when key stakeholders align their objectives.
GICL’s extensive deployment of fiber optic infrastructure stands as a pivotal step towards achieving the National Broadband Plan’s objectives. This development is poised to significantly enhance connectivity and digital services throughout Nigeria.
