TikTok, the popular short video platform, has unveiled its inaugural Global Youth Council, featuring 15 teenagers from various corners of the globe, including several representatives from Africa.
The move aims to elevate African voices in digital spaces and ensure greater inclusivity and safety for users on the platform.
Comprising members from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt, the Global Youth Council will serve as an advisory body, offering insights and recommendations to TikTok on enhancing its platform’s inclusivity and safety measures, particularly within the African context.
Valiant Richey, TikTok’s Global Head of Outreach and Partnerships, emphasized the platform’s commitment to empowering young people and involving them in shaping the digital landscape. He highlighted the importance of listening to teenagers and implementing meaningful changes based on their feedback to create a safer online environment.

The council’s responsibilities will include addressing issues related to online safety, digital inclusion, and content moderation. Their input will play a pivotal role in guiding TikTok’s policies and initiatives to better serve the diverse needs of its African user base.
The launch of the Global Youth Council follows TikTok’s recent research report, which underscored the significant role of online platforms in empowering African youth and advancing digital inclusion efforts.
Jennifer Kaberi, CEO of Mtoto News in Kenya, commended TikTok’s initiative, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in shaping the digital future. She highlighted the need for young voices to influence digital landscapes, underscoring TikTok’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment as a significant step forward.
Through initiatives like the Global Youth Council, TikTok aims to revolutionize digital engagement by centering the perspectives of the youth who will inherit and shape the digital era.
