Jonathan calls for truce in Rivers State political crisis

Date:

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed for peace in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to collaborate for the state’s progress.

Speaking on Monday during the flag-off of the Trans-Kalabari Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Jonathan expressed concern over the escalating tensions, emphasizing the need for outgoing and incoming governors to work together for the welfare of the state’s citizens.

“In the case of Rivers, Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara must work together to develop the land and people of Rivers State. The tension will not help us,” Jonathan stated, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for the state’s development.

Jonathan stressed the critical role of Rivers State in the nation’s stability, particularly as the heart of the Niger Delta region. He warned against destabilizing the state, noting the potential ripple effects on the entire Niger Delta and beyond.

Expressing worry over the recurring conflicts between governors and their predecessors across Nigeria, Jonathan emphasized the need for smoother transitions, citing the management of presidential successions at the national level as a positive example.

As Rivers State continues to grapple with political discord, Jonathan’s call for a truce underscores the importance of unity and collaboration in fostering peace and progress within the state.
