Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly refuted claims suggesting that he expressed willingness to serve as a vice-presidential candidate.
Obi made this clarification on Saturday via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, following an interview with News Central TV where he discussed his presidential aspirations and Nigeria’s economic situation.
In the interview, Obi emphasized his openness to collaborating with other presidential candidates who are genuinely committed to Nigeria’s progress, without a focus on state capture. However, he alleged that his words were twisted by some individuals, sparking false reports about his political intentions.
“I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV… Some fifth columnists have resorted to propaganda, deliberately distorting the narrative,” Obi stated.

The former governor reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and reiterated that he has never expressed any willingness to be a vice-presidential candidate, describing such reports as blatant misrepresentation. He further explained that his comments were clear, and it was surprising to see his words misconstrued.
“My statement was unequivocal, and I am genuinely surprised by the misrepresentation of my words… I have consistently maintained that I am open to working with those committed to building a new Nigeria,” Obi said.
Obi expressed his commitment to Nigeria’s progress and reiterated that his ambition is not driven by desperation for the presidency. He highlighted his continuous contributions to the country’s development, even outside of political office.
“My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing,” he concluded.
