The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has assured Nigerians of the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Kaduna Refineries, emphasizing that the projects aim to achieve world-class operational standards.
This assurance was provided in a statement issued on Thursday by Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., following former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s skepticism regarding the refineries’ viability.
According to NNPC, the ongoing overhaul at the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery represents a departure from the past routine Turnaround Maintenance (TAM). Instead, the focus is on achieving global benchmarks in operations.
The company also highlighted the successful rehabilitation of the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and the Warri Refinery, stressing that these efforts reflect its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Former President Obasanjo had earlier questioned the viability of the refineries, citing advice from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) during his administration, which reportedly flagged corruption concerns. Obasanjo alleged that the NNPC misled Nigerians by claiming the refineries are operational.
In response, Soneye defended NNPC’s efforts, inviting Obasanjo to personally inspect the rehabilitated facilities.
“We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to join us in this historic journey,” Soneye stated. “His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance.”
Soneye also lauded Obasanjo’s contributions to national development, emphasizing the importance of his voice on matters of public interest.
Soneye highlighted NNPC’s evolution into a profit-oriented global energy leader, transitioning from a loss-making government entity to a private, integrated energy company.
“Our focus is not only on harnessing traditional resources but also on developing cleaner, cheaper, and sustainable energy solutions to meet Nigeria’s growing demands,” Soneye said.
This transformation, he noted, is driven by the leadership of the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and the reformist policies of President Bola Tinubu.
NNPC reiterated its dedication to maintaining its refineries to global standards for sustainable operations. The comprehensive overhaul of the refineries is part of broader reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s energy sector and ensuring energy security.
As the refineries near completion, NNPC remains steadfast in its goal to position Nigeria as a leader in energy innovation and sustainability.
