A federal judge has scheduled the trial for former President Donald Trump’s election subversion conspiracy case to begin on March 4, 2024.
This decision places the trial, considered one of the largest criminal cases in American history, right in the midst of the peak election season. The chosen date falls just before “Super Tuesday,” a significant day in the Republican primary contest for the 2024 election.
Special counsel Jack Smith had proposed a trial start date of January 2, while Trump’s defense team suggested a date of April 2026. However, US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan found both proposals too extreme and set the trial date for March 4, 2024. The judge emphasized that Trump’s professional obligations would need to accommodate the trial.
This trial date could play a pivotal role in Trump’s potential bid to recapture the presidency. The 77-year-old former president faces multiple criminal indictments this year, including charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding related to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Trump is also facing separate trials in New York and Florida on charges of paying hush money to a porn star and mishandling top-secret government documents, respectively. Additionally, Trump and 18 co-defendants are facing racketeering charges in Georgia for their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election result in the state.
Judge Tanya Chutkan, appointed by former Democratic president Barack Obama, has been involved in high-profile cases related to the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Trump has accused her of being partisan, but her rulings have been upheld in legal proceedings.
