Adekunle Sonola, CEO of Polaris Bank, urged the Nigerian government to prioritize legal policy and reforms for sustained economic growth during his presentation at the Annual Law Dinner of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) held in Lagos over the weekend.
The event, themed “Favourable Investment and Business Environment Through Legal Policy & Reforms,” attracted industry leaders, legal luminaries, and High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs).
In his address, Sonola highlighted the crucial role of legal frameworks in fostering a conducive environment for investments and business development. He emphasized the pressing need for comprehensive legal reforms to address challenges faced by businesses amid the ever-evolving national and global landscape.
The CEO delved into the prevailing challenges within the investment and business climate, citing high-interest rates, security concerns, and infrastructure deficits. Sonola stressed the significant impact of legal activities on daily business operations and overall competitiveness.
Identifying key challenges within the legal system, Sonola pinpointed prolonged dispute resolution times, case backlogs, and manual court processes. He expressed concerns about inadequate remuneration for Judges, administrative obstacles, and the imperative for enhanced law enforcement.
Proposing recommendations for comprehensive legal policy and reforms, Sonola advocated for a thorough review of business ownership laws, streamlined taxation processes, and improved immigration procedures. He underscored the importance of social embeddedness, enhanced accessibility, and the integration of automation to modernize the legal framework.

Looking ahead, Sonola emphasized the perpetual need for legal reforms to align with Nigeria’s dynamic economic and social landscape. He concluded by highlighting the pivotal role of effective legal frameworks in driving business growth, attracting investments, and fostering Nigeria’s overall economic well-being.
The session also witnessed Chairman of Lagos NBA, Olabisi Makanjuola, commending members for their support and emphasizing the tradition of fostering goodwill between the Bar and the Bench. The event featured the recognition of distinguished members of top law firms and both current and retired Jurists, acknowledging their significant contributions to the legal profession.
