Funke Akindele admits admiration for BBLs while warning of deadly risks

Date:

Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has broken her silence on the divisive topic of Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgeries, revealing that while she is a fan of the aesthetic, she lacks the “courage” to go under the knife herself.

Speaking during a candid appearance on The Morayo Show, hosted by Morayo Afolabi-Brown, the box-office queen shared her nuanced take on cosmetic enhancements, sparking a fresh conversation about beauty standards and safety in the entertainment industry.

Akindele confessed that she appreciates the results of body contouring when the outcomes look natural. For her, the appeal lies in the artistry of the procedure, though her personal fear of surgery remains a barrier.

“I must say, I love to see beautiful women with beautiful bodies. I actually like it. I am not talking about the excess ones but the normal ones,” Akindele remarked. “I want to do it but I don’t have the mind.”

Despite her personal hesitation, she maintained a “live and let live” stance, provided that those choosing surgery do so with extreme caution. “I am not against it. If you want to enhance your beauty, go ahead, but be careful,” she added.

Akindele’s warning comes at a sobering moment for Nigeria’s cosmetic surgery scene. The conversation around BBL safety has reached a fever pitch following the tragic death of popular socialite and influencer Elena Jessica Nkwopara.

Reports indicate that Nkwopara passed away in Lagos after undergoing a second, corrective BBL procedure. She had reportedly sought the surgery to fix issues from a previous operation but developed severe complications that proved fatal.

While BBLs are often glamorized on social media, health experts continue to sound the alarm on the high stakes involved. Medical professionals categorize the BBL as one of the most dangerous cosmetic procedures due to the risk of fat embolisms, where injected fat enters the bloodstream and blocks major vessels.

Key Safety Recommendations from Experts: Only use board-certified plastic surgeons. Ensure the surgery takes place in a fully equipped hospital, not a “clinic” lacking emergency gear. and also avoid “corrective” surgeries without significant recovery time between procedures.

For Funke Akindele, the balance between vanity and vitality is clear. While the “Nollywood glow-up” remains a staple of the industry, the actress is choosing to stay natural—preferring to admire the “beautiful bodies” of others from a safe, surgery-free distance.
