The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has urged the Imo State Government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to launch an immediate investigation into the recent vandalization and looting of government-installed water project equipment in Adakam Amumara autonomous community within Ezinihitte Mbaise.
In an official statement signed by Okechukwu Nwanguma, the Executive Director of RULAAC, and shared with DAILY POST, the group expressed concern over the incident and called for action to identify and prosecute those responsible for the act.
The statement highlighted the urgency of the matter and emphasized the need for both the NSCDC and the Imo State Government, led by Governor Hope Uzodinma, to collaborate in investigating the incident.
The statement quoted Chief Oscar Uzodinma Albert, Chairman-General of Umuokpo village in Adakam Amumara, who reported the incident. The vandalized water project was part of the greater Owerri, Umuahia, Okigwe, and Aba Water Schemes initiated in the 1980s by then-Governor of old Imo State, Dr. Sam Onunaka Mbakwe.
The statement further underlined that the water project aimed to provide pipe-borne water to Mbaise and parts of Obowo, with valuable equipment worth billions of naira. The incident poses a threat to public infrastructure, prompting RULAAC to call for swift action by the NSCDC and the state government.
RULAAC asserted that investigating and addressing such incidents are essential to safeguarding public resources and infrastructure, in line with the legal obligations of the NSCDC and other relevant authorities.
The group urged immediate intervention to identify the perpetrators, retrieve the stolen equipment, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
