In the wake of MultiChoice’s announcement of its inability to broadcast the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on DSTV and SuperSport, the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) has stepped in to ensure football fans in Nigeria won’t miss out on the action.
NTA revealed on Wednesday its plan to broadcast all 52 AFCON matches, providing viewers across Nigeria with an opportunity to watch the tournament without any subscription fees.
In a statement released via its official X handle early Wednesday, NTA disclosed its partnership agreement with AfroSport to air all 52 matches of the 2023 AFCON. The announcement highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding signed between NTA, Africa’s largest TV network, and AfroSport for the transmission of the highly anticipated tournament.
This development comes as a significant relief to millions of Nigerian football enthusiasts following the news that SuperSport, under MultiChoice, would not be broadcasting the live matches of the 2023 AFCON. AfroSport reportedly secured the broadcast rights from New World TV, beating MultiChoice for the sub-Saharan Africa rights to the 2023 AFCON.

Adding to the accessibility of the tournament for Nigerian audiences, the Chinese-owned Startimes will also be broadcasting the AFCON matches. This move by NTA to air the matches at no cost signifies a significant opportunity for football enthusiasts across Nigeria to enjoy the highly anticipated football extravaganza without the need for a subscription.
The NTA’s initiative is poised to bring the football fever to homes across Nigeria, ensuring that fans have unhindered access to witness the thrilling AFCON action throughout the tournament’s duration, scheduled to kick off between January 13 and February 11 in Ivory Coast.
