Makinde vows justice for victims of Ibadan stampede, suspects to face trial

Date:

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has vowed that those responsible for the tragic Christmas funfair stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of at least 35 children, will face trial, irrespective of their status.

Governor Makinde made this declaration during the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state workers held at the Secretariat, Ibadan, on Monday. His remarks came in response to calls for leniency towards the suspects involved in the incident.

“There are arguments that similar events in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not result in prosecutions. However, in Oyo State, the rule of law will prevail,” Makinde asserted, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to justice.

While acknowledging the possibility of bail for the suspects, Makinde insisted that the judicial process must run its course to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.

The Interfaith Service, which brought together labour leaders, workers, political appointees, and community leaders, served as a platform for Governor Makinde to reaffirm his dedication to upholding justice and governance in Oyo State.
