Paris Olympics: Nigerian cyclist makes history, competes on borrowed bicycle

Date:

In a remarkable turn of events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Ese Ukpeseraye, Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic cyclist, faced an unexpected challenge—competing on a borrowed bicycle.

The 25-year-old athlete revealed via her X account on Thursday that she had to borrow a bicycle from her German colleagues to participate in the Keirin and Sprint cycling events after being called up on short notice.

Ukpeseraye had previously made history by representing Nigeria in the women’s road race on August 4, though she was unable to complete the event. Undeterred, she took to the track on Wednesday for the Keirin and Sprint, finishing sixth in the first round but unfortunately failing to qualify through the repechage.

In her tweet, Ukpeseraye expressed gratitude to the German team, who stepped in at the last minute to lend her a bicycle, allowing her to compete. Despite the challenges, she is scheduled to participate in one more event on Friday.

Ukpeseraye’s determination and resilience in the face of adversity have earned her admiration, making her a standout figure at the Paris Olympics.

The Paris 2024 Olympics is set to be a groundbreaking event, taking full advantage of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Agenda 2020 to reshape the Games in a more inclusive, gender-balanced, and youth-focused direction. In line with this vision, Paris 2024 has proposed the addition of four new sports that resonate with younger audiences, emphasizing creativity and athleticism.

The Paris 2024 organizing committee is turning the city’s most iconic landmarks into stunning sporting venues, promising an extraordinary experience for athletes, spectators, and television viewers alike. This innovative venue concept is central to the masterplan, which features 35 carefully selected locations across the city.

As the host of the world’s biggest event, Paris 2024 aims to leave a lasting impact on the country. The organizing committee is dedicated not only to delivering an exceptional Games but also to embedding the values of sport into daily life and demonstrating that excellence can be achieved while upholding sustainability. The Paris 2024 Olympics are poised to set a new standard for future Games, blending tradition with modernity in a city known for its rich cultural heritage.
